Will you wear a piece of jewelry made by a blind designer?
Commonly, blind people are trained with massage therapy to help them interact with the rest of the world as well as earn their own means of living. Today, blind women in India are designing jewelry.
Made in the Dark is an initiative that came out from 3 students from Royal College of Art students in UK and 2 from National Institute of Design in India. The visually challenged designers use their sense of smell to create designs. The beads are scented and therefor guide the designers into what color they are using. The finished product are then sold to retailers all over India.
According to the figures in 2012, there are already 7.8 million blind people in India accounting for 20¤% of the 39 million total around the world. In addition, there are 285 million visually impaired in the country . With initiatives like this, the blind people in India as well as in the rest of the world will have more avenues to improve their lives.
What about in your country? Are there initiatives to help the blind and other physically challenged people?
